The Tucson Lobos are a community based wheelchair basketball team.
This is the sixth season for the Lobos who compete as an independent team and a member
of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. The N.W.B.A. is comprised of
approximately 260 teams throughout the United States and Canada, with the regular
season and playoffs based on the N.C.A.A. format.
The purpose of the team is to provide to any and all people, disabled in any degree
that would prohibit them from playing the game in the traditional way, a
chance to compete in the game of basketball. The Lobos also promote disability
awareness through assemblies given to local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, and
require all team members to be available for community service and outreach programs.
For many of our disabled community members this game not only provides an outlet
for their competitive nature, but a strong aerobic workout beneficial to both their
physical and mental health. The availability of options for the
disabled to play and compete in a team-oriented sport is very limited.
